Rare 2nd-Century 'Floralia' Mosaic Uncovered in Ancient Perge Reveals Grandeur of Roman Spring Festivals

Excavations in the ancient city of Perge, Turkey, have brought to light a vibrant floor mosaic depicting the goddess Flora presiding over a lavish banquet. The mosaic, which spans over 40 square meters, shows figures holding garlands of roses and silver vessels, providing the first physical evidence of the localized scale of Rome's Floralia festival in the eastern provinces.

The site also contained several lead theater tokens, suggesting that the festival involved public dramatic performances and choral competitions. This discovery highlights how Roman cultural celebrations were adapted by local elites to blend imperial traditions with local Anatolian harvest customs.
