Marine archaeologists exploring a submerged temple precinct dedicated to Isis-Pharia off the coast of Alexandria have discovered a fragment of a Hellenistic astronomical sphere. The artifact, made of heavily encrusted bronze, contains a series of intricate gear teeth and celestial coordinates engraved in Greek, dating to the late 4th Century BCE. This predates the famous Antikythera mechanism and suggests that the origins of Greek mechanical computing were more widespread than previously believed.
The fragment was found within a ritual context, placed as an offering at the base of a colossal statue. This suggests that high-precision astronomical instruments were not only scientific tools but also sacred objects used to synchronize temple rituals with planetary alignments. Continued sonar scans of the site indicate additional bronze components remain buried under the silt, promising further insights into the early history of Greco-Egyptian mechanical engineering.
