Discovery of a 1,500-Year-Old Maya 'Temple of the Hummingbird' Featuring Intact Blue-Pigment Murals in Belize's Cayo District

Deep within the rainforests of the Cayo District, archaeologists have identified a previously unrecorded Maya temple dedicated to the hummingbird deity, a messenger of the sun. The structure, which dates to roughly 500 CE, contains a small inner chamber decorated with remarkably preserved murals painted in the iconic 'Maya Blue' pigment, which has resisted fading for over a millennium.

The murals depict complex scenes of agricultural fertility and ritual dance, offering rare insights into the regional cults of the Maya lowlands during the Classic Period. Researchers believe the site served as a pilgrimage destination for local communities seeking divine protection for their cacao crops. The site is currently being secured to prevent looting and to allow for further high-resolution digital scanning of the artwork.
