Significant 9th-Century Gurjara-Pratihara Style Temple Foundations Uncovered in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur District

A survey by the State Archaeological Department has identified the remains of a significant 9th-century temple complex in the Vindhyan range of Mirzapur. The foundations suggest a classic Gurjara-Pratihara architectural style, characterized by a developed shikhara and ornate doorways. The site includes a large ritual tank and several pedestals that once supported monolithic idols of solar deities.

Fragments of sandstone friezes recovered from the site depict scenes from the life of Krishna and are executed in the delicate style typical of the Kannauj school of art. This find establishes Mirzapur as a key cultural link between the central Indian heartland and the eastern Ganges plain during the early medieval period.
