Archaeologists in the Atacama Uncover 'Silver-Threaded' Guano-Sacks Linked to 1,200-Year-Old 'Sea-Fertility' Festivals

Near the coastal cliffs of the Atacama Desert in Chile, researchers have discovered a ritual cache containing four small textile bags woven with shimmering silver threads. Unusually, the bags were filled with high-grade guano, a nitrogen-rich fertilizer that was a cornerstone of ancient Andean agriculture.

This discovery suggests that the Chinchorro or early Tiwanaku-influenced cultures held specific 'Sea-Fertility' festivals where the fertilizer itself was treated as a sacred gift from the ocean. The silver threading implies that the act of bringing guano from the shore to the inland fields was accompanied by ritual parades and symbolic exchanges to ensure the next year's harvest.
