Accelerated melting of glaciers in Iran's Zagros Mountains has led to the discovery of remarkably preserved Bronze Age pastoral campsites. The retreating ice revealed leather pouches, woven wool fragments, and wooden tent stakes that have remained frozen for nearly 4,000 years. These artifacts provide an unprecedented look at the transhumance patterns of early mountain-dwelling communities and their strategies for surviving high-altitude environments.
Researchers from the International Journal of Environmental Archaeology state that the organic remains offer a rare opportunity to study ancient textiles and diet through pollen and residue analysis. However, the discovery also serves as a stark reminder of the rapid pace of climate change, as these artifacts begin to degrade immediately upon exposure to the air. Emergency conservation teams are currently working to stabilize the finds before they are lost to decomposition.
