High in the Peruvian Andes, explorers have discovered a ceremonial temple belonging to a late-Chavin or early-succession culture. The site, dubbed the Temple of the Sacred Condor, is built from massive megalithic blocks and features a central altar encrusted with raw emeralds. This is the first recorded instance of emeralds being used as primary structural decorations in an Andean religious context.
The temple is positioned to align with the southern solstice, where a shadow shaped like a condor's wing falls across the altar. In addition to the emeralds, archaeologists found several ceramic flutes and spondylus shell offerings, indicating that the site served as a major pilgrimage center for mountain-dwelling communities. The remote location has protected the site from looters for nearly three millennia.
