Significant 2,600-Year-Old Phoenician 'Temple of the Maritime Lord' Identified on Malta’s Southern Coast

Marine and terrestrial archaeologists have identified a major Phoenician sanctuary site on the southern coast of Malta, dating back to the 6th century BCE. Termed the Temple of the Maritime Lord, the complex consists of a series of terraced stone platforms and a central rectangular shrine. The site was strategically positioned to be visible from the sea, serving as both a religious center and a landmark for ancient navigators crossing the central Mediterranean.

Excavations have revealed a wealth of votive objects, including small terracotta boats and rare ivory carvings of sea monsters. Researchers also found evidence of sacrificial pits containing the remains of tuna and other large pelagic fish, suggesting that the Phoenicians offered the first catch of the season to the deity of the sea. This discovery provides new insights into the Punic presence on the Maltese islands and their integration of maritime commerce with sacred ritual practices.
