Climate Archaeology: Retreating Glaciers in the Southern Alps of New Zealand Reveal 800-Year-Old Māori Voyaging Equipment

Accelerated melting of high-altitude ice patches in New Zealand's Southern Alps has yielded a rare find: a perfectly preserved Māori steering oar and several woven flax sails dating back to the 13th century. These artifacts, found at a former mountain pass, suggest that early Māori explorers utilized high-altitude routes to transport heavy maritime equipment between the coastal settlements of the North and South Islands.

The cold, oxygen-poor environment of the glacier acted as a natural time capsule, preventing the decay of the organic fibers. Local Iwi elders are working closely with archaeologists to document the findings, which provide the first physical evidence of the specific weaving techniques used for early Pacific sails. The discovery is currently undergoing specialized freeze-drying treatment to ensure its long-term stability.
