Restoration of 12th-Century 'Shilahara' Dynasty Temple in Ratnagiri Unveils Hidden 'Iron-Clamped' Tsunami-Resistant Foundations

Structural engineers and archaeologists working on the restoration of a Shilahara Dynasty Shiva temple on the Konkan coast have discovered an unprecedented engineering feature: a tsunami-resistant foundation. The massive granite blocks at the base of the temple are linked by a complex system of interlocking iron clamps poured with molten lead.

This seismic and hydraulic reinforcement allowed the structure to withstand coastal surges and earthquakes for over 800 years. The discovery proves that medieval Indian temple architects in the 12th century possessed a deep understanding of structural dynamics and environmental risks. The restoration project is now using similar traditional techniques to reinforce the weakened portions of the upper shikhara.
