Rare 1st-Century Roman 'Standardized Weight' Collection Uncovered in a Merchant's Villa in Southern Egypt

During excavations in the ancient port of Berenike, archaeologists unearthed a complete set of bronze and lead weights inside a 1st-century Roman villa. The weights, marked with official imperial seals, were found alongside a detailed ledger recording the exchange of Roman gold for Indian pepper and Frankincense.

This finding highlights the rigorous standardization of trade metrics at the height of the Indo-Roman spice trade. The villa, likely belonging to a wealthy merchant, also contained intact amphorae from Gaul and glass beads from Southeast Asia, showcasing the extraordinary connectivity of the ancient global economy.
