Archaeologists in Serbia have uncovered a remarkably well-preserved cavalry armoury within the Roman legionary fortress of Viminacium. The structure served as a maintenance and storage facility for the elite auxiliary cavalry units stationed on the Danubian frontier. The find includes rare iron anvils, specialized leather-working tools, and a stockpile of bronze rivets and buckles.
The most spectacular discovery is a set of three silver-inlaid parade helmets, featuring embossed masks of deities and mythological scenes. Unlike standard combat gear, these helmets were used during ritual displays and military games. Their find within a dedicated workshop suggests that Viminacium was a center for high-end metalworking and military craftsmanship during the 1st century CE.
