Breakthrough Heritage Tech: AI 'Chronos-ML' Predicts Hidden Archaeological Sites Using Soil-Moisture Memory

A revolutionary new artificial intelligence platform called Chronos-ML is transforming the field of non-invasive archaeology by predicting the locations of buried structures based on 'soil-moisture memory.' Developed by a consortium of European universities, the tool analyzes hyperspectral satellite data to detect subtle variations in vegetation stress and moisture retention that indicate the presence of subterranean walls and foundations.

In its initial trial, the AI successfully identified a forgotten 4th-century Roman garrison in the Rhine Valley that had remained invisible to traditional LiDAR and ground-penetrating radar. This technology allows heritage managers to pre-emptively protect sites from illegal looting and urban development without the need for costly and destructive excavations.
