During its latest session, UNESCO has officially inscribed the 'Traditional High-Altitude Terraced Vineyard Landscapes of the Zagros Mountains' in Iran to the World Heritage List. This designation honors a 3,000-year-old system of dry-stone masonry and gravity-fed irrigation that has allowed viticulture to flourish in a semi-arid, high-elevation environment.
The committee highlighted the site for its unique "bio-cultural resilience," noting how the local communities have maintained traditional grape varieties and sustainable soil management techniques through shifting climates over millennia. The recognition is expected to bring increased support for the preservation of these historic terraces, which are currently facing pressure from rural depopulation and modern industrial agriculture.
