Rare 12th-Century 'Sena' Dynasty Temple Ruins featuring 'Black-Basalt' Nataraja Statue Discovered in West Bengal

Excavations in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal have revealed the foundations of a significant 12th-century temple complex from the Sena Dynasty. The site yielded a magnificent black-basalt statue of Nataraja, standing nearly four feet tall, which survived the collapse of the main sanctuary. This find is rare as many structural temples of this era in the region were lost to riverine shifts.

The temple exhibits the Rekha-Deul style of architecture, with evidence of ornate terracotta panels that once decorated the outer walls. Archaeologists also recovered gold coins from the reign of Lakshmana Sena, confirming the high level of royal patronage this religious center enjoyed during the final century of the Sena era.
