UNESCO Inscribes the 'Traditional Vernacular Earthen Architecture of the Senufo People' to World Heritage List

UNESCO has formally designated the earthen architectural landscapes of the Senufo people, spanning regions in the Ivory Coast and Mali, as a World Heritage site. This recognition highlights the unique "Tamberma-style" construction, characterized by towering granaries and communal dwellings built from sun-dried mud and straw, which represent a century-old equilibrium between the community and the Savannah environment.

The designation aims to provide international support for the preservation of these fragile structures, which face increasing threats from seasonal flooding and the loss of traditional maintenance knowledge. The UNESCO committee noted that the sites are not merely physical structures but serve as the physical manifestation of Senufo cosmology and social organization, housing sacred spaces and ancestral shrines within their walls.
