Receding Glaciers in the Altai Mountains Reveal 2,500-Year-Old 'Scythian' Iron-Smelting Furnaces with Intact Slag Deposits

Rapidly melting ice in the Altai Mountains of Central Asia has exposed a remarkably well-preserved Scythian industrial site. Archaeologists have identified stone-lined iron-smelting furnaces dating to approximately 500 BCE, complete with intact slag deposits and charcoal remnants. The discovery challenges the traditional view of the Scythians as purely nomadic, revealing a sophisticated, sedentary metal-working industry at high altitudes.

The site was protected for millennia by a permanent ice patch that has only recently vanished due to regional warming. Along with the industrial kilns, researchers recovered leather bellows and iron tongs, providing the first direct evidence of the specific technological processes used by Scythian smiths to forge their legendary weaponry and ornate jewelry.
