Restoration of 15th-Century 'Inca' High-Altitude Sun Temple in Argentina’s Salta Province Reveals Intact Ritual Platforms

Archaeologists and conservationists working in the high-altitude regions of Argentina’s Salta Province have announced the successful phase-one restoration of a 15th-century Inca Sun Temple. Located at an elevation of over 4,500 meters, the site, known as Ushnu de Llullaillaco, was once a critical node in the Inca road system used for solar observations and sacrificial offerings to the sun god, Inti.

The restoration project has uncovered perfectly preserved granite ritual platforms and complex drainage systems that allowed the temple to withstand seismic activity for centuries. Scholars noted that the site features unique 'double-jamb' doorways, a hallmark of imperial Inca architecture reserved for sacred structures. These findings provide new insights into how the Inca Empire consolidated its power in the southern frontier through architectural dominance and religious ceremonies.
