9th-Century 'Sattva-Suddhi' Scroll Discovered in a Remote Arunachal Cave Explores the Metaphysics of Mental Clarity

A group of cave explorers and heritage researchers in the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh has discovered a birch-bark scroll inside a copper cylinder. Dating to the 9th century, the manuscript, titled 'Sattva-Suddhi' (The Clarification of Being), details an obscure philosophical practice from the Himalayan borderlands. The text focuses on the metaphysics of 'Sattva' (purity/clarity), treating it not just as a quality of mind but as a fundamental substance of the universe that can be refined through cognitive exercises.

The scroll is written in an early form of the Sharda script and contains diagrams illustrating the 'unfolding of awareness' through different levels of perception. Scholars believe this text represents a unique synthesis of Vedic Samkhya and local indigenous wisdom traditions of the Northeast. The discovery underscores the geographic reach of sophisticated philosophical inquiry into the furthest reaches of the Himalayas during the early medieval period.
