A joint Vietnamese-Indonesian research team has discovered a 9th-century temple complex in the Central Highlands of Vietnam that exhibits a rare Cham-Mataram hybrid style. The discovery provides the first physical evidence of a direct architectural exchange between the Cham Kingdom and the Mataram Dynasty of Java, featuring unique bronze-inlaid brickwork typically associated with Javanese candi.
The site includes a central brick tower surrounded by several smaller shrines containing Sanskrit inscriptions that describe a maritime marriage alliance between the two seafaring powers. This find reshapes the historical understanding of trade networks and religious syncretism in Southeast Asia, highlighting a shared cultural heritage that transcended the South China Sea during the early medieval era.
