UNESCO Inscribes the 'Traditional High-Altitude Terraced Buckwheat-Gardens of the Eastern Bhutanese Highlands' to World Heritage List

In a landmark decision during its 2026 spring session, UNESCO has officially inscribed the Traditional High-Altitude Terraced Buckwheat-Gardens of the Eastern Bhutanese Highlands to the World Heritage List. This designation recognizes the unique agro-ecological systems developed by the Brokpa and Sharchop communities, which have maintained these nitrogen-fixing terraced landscapes for over a millennium. The site is lauded for its harmonious integration of spiritual land management and sustainable agricultural resilience in the face of Himalayan climate shifts.

The inscription includes twelve distinct clusters of terraced fields located above 3,500 meters, where traditional seed-saving practices have preserved rare varieties of high-altitude buckwheat. UNESCO experts highlighted that these landscapes are not merely agricultural but serve as living repositories of intangible heritage, featuring ancient dry-stone walling techniques and complex irrigation rituals that govern water distribution during the pre-monsoon season.
