A team of researchers exploring high-altitude caves in the Uttarakhand Himalayas has discovered a 9th-century scroll titled 'Vairagya-Vidhi'. The text provides a systematic ethical guide to detachment, distinguishing between 'passive avoidance' and 'active, mindful engagement' with the world.
The scroll posits that true renunciation is not the abandonment of duty, but the refinement of the 'inner gaze' (Antar-Drishti). It outlines specific cognitive exercises designed to cultivate a state of 'equanimous agency,' where a person acts decisively in the world without being bound by the emotional results of those actions. This discovery sheds new light on the practical ethics of early Advaita and Samkhya practitioners living in isolation.
