"Hematite-Inscribed" Ivory Discs Found in Nigeria Reveal 1,500-Year-Old Roots of Nok 'Ancestral-Wind' Festivals

A joint international research team has identified a collection of hematite-inscribed ivory discs in central Nigeria, providing a rare glimpse into the ritual life of the Nok culture. The discs are marked with swirling geometric patterns representing the movement of air and were found in a high-altitude ceremonial enclosure designed to catch the harmattan winds, suggesting the existence of a 1,500-year-old "Ancestral-Wind" festival.

The findings indicate that these discs were suspended from wooden scaffolds during seasonal storms, creating a rhythmic clacking sound believed to be the voices of ancestors. This discovery pushes back the timeline for organized communal masquerades in West Africa and highlights the sophisticated use of natural elements in early Nigerian cultural heritage and traditional religious celebrations.
