The National Museum of Scotland Formally Repatriates Sacred 19th-Century 'Haida' Copper Shields to the Haida Gwaii Nation

The National Museum of Scotland has announced the formal repatriation of two sacred 19th-century 'Copper' shields to the Haida Gwaii Nation in British Columbia, Canada. These objects, known as T’aa’uu, are highly significant symbols of wealth, status, and oral history within Haida culture. The return marks the culmination of a decade-long dialogue focused on the ethical management of indigenous cultural property held in international collections.

Museum officials stated that the shields were acquired under circumstances that do not align with modern ethical standards of museum practice. In a joint statement, the Haida Nation expressed that the return of these ancestral treasures is a vital step toward cultural healing and the revitalization of traditional potlatch ceremonies. The shields will be housed in the Saahlinda Naay (Haida Gwaii Museum) for educational and ceremonial use by future generations.
