During a structural renovation of an ancient building in the Kashi Vishwanath corridor of Varanasi, workers discovered a subterranean chamber containing hundreds of well-preserved manuscripts. Among them is a 12th-century treatise titled 'Tarka-Vimarsha-Kalpa', which contains a series of rigorous critiques against the epistemological theories of the Buddhist logician Dharmakirti. The library appears to have belonged to a specialized school of Purva Mimamsa that flourished in the city before the medieval era's major political shifts.
This find is significant because it preserves a "lost dialogue" between major philosophical schools that was previously known only through fragmentary citations in later works. The manuscripts detail sophisticated arguments regarding the eternity of sound and the self-validity of knowledge, providing fresh insights into the intellectual vibrancy of 12th-century Varanasi. Experts are currently using multispectral imaging to document the fragile documents before they are moved to a conservation facility.
