Intact 12th-Dynasty 'Director of the Royal Desert-Oasis Waystations' Tomb Uncovered in the Faiyum with Rare Alabaster Itinerary Tablets

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the discovery of an intact 12th-Dynasty tomb belonging to an official named Kheti, who held the title of 'Director of the Royal Desert-Oasis Waystations.' Located in the Faiyum Oasis region, the burial chamber contains a series of remarkably preserved alabaster itinerary tablets. These tablets provide detailed logs of supply routes, water sources, and military outposts connecting the Nile Valley to the remote Western Oases during the Middle Kingdom.

The tomb walls are adorned with vibrant reliefs showing the organization of donkey caravans and the management of deep-well irrigation systems in the desert. Unlike the more common funeral scenes, these depictions focus on the logistical challenges of arid-zone administration, including the distribution of grain rations to remote frontier guards. This find offers unprecedented data on the economic integration of the Sahara into the Egyptian state and the sophisticated infrastructure used to maintain trade security across the desert sands.
