Discovery of 2,200-Year-Old 'Spirit-Drum' Foundations in Buyeo Points to Origins of Ancient Korean 'Yeonggo' Harvest Festivals

Archaeologists in the Buyeo region have identified a series of massive post-holes arranged in a circular pattern, which carbon dating places in the 2nd century BC. These foundations are believed to have supported monumental spirit-drums used during the Yeonggo, a traditional festival where the ancient people of the Puyeo kingdom gathered to sing, dance, and offer prayers to the heavens.

The site also yielded fragments of ceremonial bronze bells and animal bone remains, suggesting that the event was a multi-day communal banquet. This discovery provides the earliest physical evidence for the drumming-to-spirit traditions that became a cornerstone of East Asian agricultural heritage and ritual performance.
