Sunken 16th-Century 'Ayutthaya' Kingdom Diplomatic Vessel Identified off the Coast of South Africa with Cargo of Silver and Lacquer

Marine archaeologists have confirmed the identity of a mid-16th-century shipwreck located off the coast of South Africa's Eastern Cape. The vessel, a diplomatic merchant ship from the Ayutthaya Kingdom of ancient Thailand, was discovered in an anoxic pocket of the seabed, which preserved its structural timbers and much of its sensitive cargo.

The wreckage has yielded a stunning collection of silver-inlaid lacquerware, ceremonial daggers, and silk remnants. Researchers believe the vessel was part of an early diplomatic mission intended for the Portuguese court, carrying high-status gifts to secure maritime trade routes around the Cape of Good Hope. This discovery marks the furthest western reach of documented Ayutthayan maritime activity ever found.
