3,000-Year-Old 'Western Zhou Dynasty Imperial Chariot-Upholstery Workshop' and Intact Silk-Thread Reels Found in Shaanxi Province

Archaeologists in Shaanxi have uncovered a rare workshop dating to the Western Zhou Dynasty that specialized in the decorative interiors and upholstery of royal chariots. The excavation revealed specialized vats for mineral-based leather dyes and the remains of bronze-tipped sewing needles used for intricate embroidery.

Remarkably, the team found several intact wooden reels still wound with fragments of crimson and gold silk thread, preserved by the unique soil chemistry of the region. This discovery provides unprecedented insight into the luxury craft traditions of the Zhou elite and the high value placed on the aesthetic presentation of military and ceremonial vehicles.
