University of Aberdeen Formally Returns Sacred 19th-Century 'Asante' Gold Ornaments to Ghana's Manhyia Palace

The University of Aberdeen has finalized the repatriation of a collection of gold ornaments and regalia taken from the Asante Kingdom during the late 19th century. The items, which include ceremonial beads and a gold pendant, were acquired by the university's museum in 1897 following the British expedition to Kumasi. This return marks the first time a Scottish academic institution has fully transferred legal ownership of Asante regalia directly to the Asantehene, the King of the Asante people.

The return was facilitated by the university's proactive review of its ethnographic collections, which identified the artifacts as part of the cultural loot removed during colonial-era conflicts. Representatives from the university traveled to Ghana to present the items at the Manhyia Palace, where they will be permanently housed in the palace museum. Professor George Boyne, Principal of the University, stated that the return is an essential step in acknowledging the university's colonial history and fostering new academic partnerships with Ghanaian heritage institutions.
