2,200-Year-Old Ptolemaic Temple of Isis with Intact Painted Reliefs Uncovered in Egypt’s Sohag

Archaeologists from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities have announced the discovery of a significant Ptolemaic-era temple dedicated to the goddess Isis in the Sohag province. The structure, dating back to approximately 200 BCE, features remarkably preserved limestone walls adorned with vibrant painted reliefs depicting royal offerings and celestial deities.

A central limestone altar remains perfectly intact within the inner sanctum, surrounded by inscriptions that detail the temple's dedication by local governors. This discovery provides new insights into the religious landscape of Middle Egypt during the Hellenistic period and the continued prominence of the cult of Isis during the Ptolemaic dynasty.
