Deep within the dense forests of the Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh, explorers have identified the ruins of a rare 9th-century temple belonging to the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda and features exceptionally well-preserved sandstone friezes of the Saptamatrikas (Seven Mothers) surrounding the main entrance.
The architectural style exhibits the classic Nagara form typical of the early medieval period in Central India. Local heritage enthusiasts and state archaeologists are calling for the immediate protection of the site, which also includes a nearby stepwell with similar ornamental carvings, to prevent illegal mining and looting in the remote area.
