The 'Incense and Indigo' Seaway: Researchers Map 1,200-Year-Old Maritime Trade Link Between the Srivijaya Empire and the Swahili Coast

Archaeologists using advanced isotopic analysis of ceramic residues have identified a direct 8th-century maritime trade route connecting the Srivijaya Empire in Southeast Asia to the Swahili Coast of East Africa. This "Incense and Indigo" seaway facilitated the exchange of aromatic resins and high-quality dyes long before the peak of the Age of Discovery. The study, published in Nature Archaeology, highlights the early sophistication of Indian Ocean navigation.

The research team identified specific chemical signatures of Sumatran resins in storage jars found at coastal sites in modern-day Tanzania. In return, African ivory and gold were traded through a network of entrepôts in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. This discovery reshapes our understanding of pre-colonial globalism and the critical role that monsoon-driven trade played in connecting disparate civilizations across thousands of miles of open ocean.
