Spain's Prado Museum has finalized the restitution of three significant 16th-century gold pectorals to Colombia's Museo del Oro. The artifacts, belonging to the Muisca civilization, are renowned for their intricate "tunjos" style and symbolic representation of solar deities. These items were taken during the colonial period and had been part of the Spanish royal collection for centuries.
The return marks a milestone in the diplomatic dialogue between Spain and its former colonies regarding cultural sovereignty. The Ministry of Culture of Colombia stated that the pectorals will be the centerpiece of a new exhibit focused on the spiritual life of the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. This move follows a series of recent agreements aimed at standardizing the return of sacred pre-Columbian artifacts held in European national collections.
