The ‘Lapis-and-Linen’ Route: Researchers Identify 4,000-Year-Old Luxury Trade Link Between the Oxus Civilization and Old Kingdom Egypt

New archaeological evidence has uncovered the ‘Lapis-and-Linen’ Route, a sophisticated trade network that connected the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC) in Central Asia to the Old Kingdom of Egypt around 2400 BCE. By analyzing trace elements in lapis lazuli found in Saqqara, researchers matched the stones to specific mines in the Hindu Kush, alongside traces of Egyptian flax fibers discovered in Oxus settlement layers.

This discovery suggests that the trade of blue gemstones was not merely a local exchange but part of a high-value maritime and overland circuit involving intermediary ports in the Persian Gulf. The study, published this week, highlights the reciprocal nature of the trade, where Egyptian linen textiles were highly prized in Central Asian royal courts. This findings redraw the map of early Bronze Age globalization, showing it was far more expansive than previously theorized.
