Climate Archaeology: Thawing Permafrost in the Putorana Plateau Reveals 4,500-Year-Old ‘Siberian’ Hunting Kits

The rapid melting of permafrost in the remote Putorana Plateau has revealed a series of perfectly preserved hunting kits belonging to a previously unknown Neolithic culture. The find includes bows reinforced with sinew, arrows with micro-blade tips, and bone carvings depicting reindeer migrations. Unlike other Arctic finds, these kits show advanced composite technology that predates known developments in the region by several centuries.

Researchers at the Siberian Heritage Institute are rushing to preserve the organic materials, which include birch bark quivers and leather straps that remain supple despite being frozen for over four millennia. This discovery provides a rare window into how early northern hunters adapted to the shifting climates of the Holocene. The site is now under emergency protection as the thawing ground threatens to collapse the ancient settlement layers into the surrounding rivers.
