Excavation of 'Obsidian-Dotted' Ritual Dance Floors in the Colombian Highlands Reveal 1,200-Year-Old Roots of the 'Festival of the Golden Frog'

Excavations in the Colombian Highlands have uncovered a series of obsidian-dotted clay platforms that served as ritual dance floors for the ancient Muisca people. Dating to approximately 800 CE, these structures were used for the Festival of the Golden Frog, a major ceremonial event intended to bring rain to the high-altitude paramos.

Fragments of gold-alloy frog figurines found embedded in the floors suggest that the dancers performed rhythmic stomping to mimic the sound of thunder. The site’s alignment with the nearby Iguaque Lake further confirms its role as a central node in the Muisca's sacred geography and seasonal ritual cycle.
