The 'Jade and Obsidian' Seaway: Researchers Map a 4,500-Year-Old Maritime Trade Link Between the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea

A multidisciplinary team of maritime archaeologists has successfully mapped what they have termed the 'Jade and Obsidian' Seaway, a sophisticated 4,500-year-old trade network connecting prehistoric coastal communities across the Gulf of Thailand. By using chemical finger-printing on hundreds of artifacts found in submerged settlements, the researchers proved that luxury materials were being exchanged over thousands of nautical miles, predating established maritime trade routes by over a millennium.

The study, published in Archaeology & Physical Anthropology, suggests that these early seafarers utilized advanced outrigger technology to navigate seasonal monsoons. The findings challenge the traditional view of prehistoric Southeast Asian societies as isolated land-based communities. Instead, they reveal a highly interconnected oceanic economy where jade ornaments and volcanic glass served as essential currency and status symbols for an emergent maritime elite.
