A team of speleologists exploring a deep limestone cave in the Italian Apennines has discovered a gallery of Upper Paleolithic hand stencils created with a previously unknown mineral pigment that glows under specific light conditions. The murals, dated to approximately 40,000 years ago, depict celestial constellations and extinct megafauna alongside over 200 human handprints.
Researchers believe the artists used a rare fluorescent calcite mixed with animal fat to create art intended for ritual use in the pitch-black depths of the cave. This find represents the oldest evidence of complex pigment chemistry in Europe and suggests a highly sophisticated understanding of light and shadow in prehistoric spiritual practices.
