UNESCO Inscribes the 'Neolithic Jasper-Mining Landscapes of the Central Apennines' as a New World Heritage Site

UNESCO has formally inscribed the 'Neolithic Jasper-Mining Landscapes of the Central Apennines' onto the World Heritage List during its latest committee session. This sprawling cultural site comprises over thirty prehistoric extraction pits where ancient communities mined high-quality red jasper for specialized tool production and regional trade networks between 6,000 and 4,500 BCE. The designation recognizes the site as one of the earliest and most complex examples of systematic mineral exploitation in the Mediterranean basin.

The preservation plan approved by the committee includes the implementation of non-invasive monitoring using drone-based LiDAR to safeguard the fragile geological formations from environmental erosion and unauthorized access. Local Italian heritage authorities emphasized that the listing will provide critical funding to establish an educational corridor focused on the lithic technology and social organization of early European farming societies.
