An unlooted burial mound in the Altai Mountains has yielded a 2,500-year-old Scythian healer’s kit. Found alongside the remains of a middle-aged woman, the kit includes a leather pouch containing several species of dried medicinal fungi, some of which are known today for their potent antibiotic and sedative properties.
The burial also contained bronze scalpels, bone needles, and a small stone mortar used for grinding ingredients. This discovery provides direct evidence of advanced medical practices among the nomadic Scythians, showing they utilized a sophisticated pharmacopeia derived from the specific ecology of the high mountain steppes.
