In the heart of Zhengzhou, archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of a massive palatial complex dating to the early Shang Dynasty. The site covers approximately 2,000 square meters and includes a central courtyard surrounded by elevated rammed-earth platforms. Most striking are the intact stone carvings decorating the base of the main hall, which depict early dragon-like deities and ancestral spirits, predating similar styles found at Anyang.
The excavation has also provided evidence of an advanced water drainage system composed of interconnected ceramic pipes that ran beneath the palace floors. This find suggests that the early Shang rulers possessed highly developed urban planning skills and a centralized labor force capable of executing grand architectural projects centuries before the peak of their civilization.
