The 'Alum and Pelt' Route: Researchers Map 1,500-Year-Old Trade Link Between the Byzantine Empire and the Ural Mountains

Archaeologists and genomicists have identified a previously unknown trans-continental trade network linking the Byzantine capital of Constantinople to the high-altitude hunter-gatherers of the Ural Mountains. Chemical analysis of 6th-century alum deposits found in Siberian burial sites suggests a sophisticated exchange where Byzantine industrial minerals were traded for high-value arctic furs, such as sable and ermine.

This 'Alum and Pelt' route challenges existing theories about the geographical reach of Byzantine commercial influence, revealing that luxury goods and industrial supplies penetrated much further north than previously assumed. The discovery was made possible by isotope fingerprinting of industrial residues, which allowed researchers to trace the specific mineral signature of alum back to Aegean volcanic mines.
