Archaeologists working in the dense, remote forests of Odisha's Rayagada district have uncovered a 6th-century Shiva temple that showcases a rare Post-Gupta architectural style. The structure is unique for its hybrid construction, utilizing a combination of high-fired clay bricks and meticulously carved stucco-and-stone reliefs, which indicates a transition period in regional temple building techniques.
Preliminary excavations have revealed a well-preserved sanctum and a mandapa with intricate floral patterns. Scholars suggest that this site may have served as a significant spiritual center for local tribal kingdoms that were integrating Vedic traditions with indigenous practices during the early medieval era. This discovery adds a vital link to the evolution of the Kalinga style of temple architecture.
