4,000-Year-Old 'Ochre-Stained' Sun-Dials Found in Gobi Desert Reveal Roots of Ancient 'Spirit-Stallion' Summer Solstice Rites

A groundbreaking survey in the Gobi Desert has revealed a series of 'ochre-stained' stone sun-dials arranged in a massive circular formation. Dated to approximately 2,000 BC, these instruments were used to track the summer solstice, marking the commencement of the 'Spirit-Stallion' festival, an ancient predecessor to modern nomadic gatherings. The site includes remains of large-scale communal hearths and ritual horse-sacrifice pits.

The ochre used to pigment the stones was sourced from over 300 miles away, highlighting the deep cultural significance of this ceremonial landscape. Researchers believe these rites were essential for strengthening clan alliances and spiritual rejuvenation before the harsh winter months, marking one of the earliest known solar festivals in Central Asia.
