Discovery of a 4,500-Year-Old 'Circular Plaza' Temple of the Valdivia Culture featuring Shell-Inlaid Altars in Coastal Ecuador

Archaeologists in Ecuador have discovered a massive ceremonial complex belonging to the Valdivia culture, one of the oldest settled cultures in the Americas. The temple features a unique circular sunken plaza paved with polished river stones and several ritual altars meticulously inlaid with spondylus shells, which were highly valued in ancient Andean trade.

The layout of the temple indicates a complex understanding of social hierarchy and celestial cycles, as the central altar aligns perfectly with the zenith of the constellation Orion. This discovery challenges existing timelines for the development of monumental religious architecture in South America. The site also yielded rare ceramic shards featuring anthropomorphic designs that hint at early shamanic traditions.
