10th-Century 'Shinda-Dynasty' Shiva Temple with Unique 'Solar-Aperture' Roof Discovered in Rural Bagalkot, Karnataka

Archaeologists have uncovered a previously undocumented temple complex belonging to the Shinda-Dynasty of Yelburga in a remote sector of the Bagalkot district. The structure is distinguished by a sophisticated 'Solar-Aperture' engineering feat in the Shikhara, which allows a precise beam of sunlight to illuminate the central Lingam during the spring equinox. This finding highlights the advanced astronomical knowledge possessed by the subordinate dynasties that flourished under the Western Chalukya Empire.

The excavation revealed a granite-built sanctum with a unique lotus-petal dome and a series of friezes depicting rural life and martial arts, which are rarely seen in larger imperial structures. Preliminary analysis of the site suggests it served as a local pilgrimage center for merchant guilds operating along the Krishna River trade routes. Preservationists are now working to stabilize the stone foundations, which have remained remarkably intact despite centuries of environmental exposure.
