The 'Jadeite and Shell' Seaway: Researchers Map 4,500-Year-Old Maritime Trade Between the Gulf of Thailand and the Philippine Archipelago

A new study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science has identified a previously unknown maritime trade network, dubbed the 'Jadeite and Shell' Seaway, which connected coastal communities in the Gulf of Thailand to the northern Philippine archipelago approximately 4,500 years ago. By conducting geochemical analysis on thousands of carved jadeite ornaments and ornamental shells, researchers tracked the movement of high-quality raw materials across over 1,000 miles of open sea.

The findings suggest that Neolithic mariners possessed advanced navigational skills and utilized seasonal monsoon winds to facilitate large-scale exchange. This trade route was not merely for luxury goods but served as a conduit for the spread of early agricultural techniques and linguistic influences across Southeast Asia. This discovery significantly alters the current understanding of the complexity and reach of early maritime civilizations in the South China Sea region.
