Rare 11th-Century 'Atma-Vidya-Sudha' Commentary by Female Sage Maitreyi-Anasuya Found in a Private Mysore Collection

A previously unknown commentary on the nature of the self, titled 'Atma-Vidya-Sudha,' has been identified in a private family archive in Mysore. The text is attributed to a female philosopher named Maitreyi-Anasuya, believed to have lived in the 11th century. This discovery is a major milestone in the study of gender in ancient Indian philosophy, as it provides a rare female perspective on the Advaita (non-dualist) tradition.

The commentary is unique for its use of metaphors drawn from domestic and natural life to explain complex ontological concepts like the relationship between the individual soul and the absolute. It challenges the predominantly ascetic and monastic tone of other contemporary works, proposing instead a Philosophy of Domestic Liberation. Scholars from the University of Mysore are currently translating the text into English and modern Kannada.
