Walters Art Museum Formally Repatriates Rare 10th-Century 'Mon-Dvaravati' Bronze Ceremonial Bells to Thailand

In a significant move for international cultural restitution, The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore has finalized the return of a rare set of 10th-century bronze ceremonial bells to the Kingdom of Thailand. The artifacts, which originate from the Mon-Dvaravati period, are considered vital examples of early Southeast Asian Buddhist art and were identified as having been illegally removed from a temple site in the 1960s.

The repatriation follows a three-year provenance investigation conducted in collaboration with the Thai Fine Arts Department. Scholars noted that the bells' intricate relief carvings and unique alloy composition provide critical insights into the liturgical practices of the Dvaravati culture, which flourished in Central Thailand between the 6th and 11th centuries. This return is part of a broader commitment by American institutions to address colonial-era and mid-century acquisitions of questionable origin.
